Hypnosis, NLP and Guided Imagery for Personal Development
Hypnosis, NLP and guided imagery are all very important tools for personal development. If we define personal development as a quest to improve all areas of your life, from fundamental issues like health or breaking bad habits to more complex issues like emotional baggage, career advancements, and spirituality, hypnosis, NLP and guided imagery are some of the best tools in your arsenal.
Consider the area of health. Hypnosis is a safe and effective treatment for a variety of ailments. A recent study conducted by the Queen Mary School of Medicine and Dentistry, London, concluded that "a single short session of hypnosis can return some of the chemical changes in the bowel associated with inflammation back towards normal in patients with ulcerative colitis," according to a report in the American Journal of Gastroenterology. (Rampton et al, 2008)
The University of Montana found in a study of migraine patients that "reframing," a fundamental underpinning of NLP, which is a method for personal development based on combining psychotherapy techniques with linguistics research, had a significant effect on headache pain. (Bacon, 1984)
Anxiety and other emotional issues can also stand in the way of personal development with regards to career. A study in the journal Medical Problems of Performing Artists measured performance anxiety in two groups of student musicians. 21 students were exposed to guided imagery before their performances while 45 others in the control group were not. The 21 students who practiced guided imagery reported a significant decrease in performance anxiety and indicated they would turn to guided imagery as their first choice to combat this problem before future performances. (Hodnett, 1999) Most schools of personal development state that our only limitation is lack of belief in ourselves. How wonderful it is that there are such safe, effective, inexpensive and readily available tools like hypnosis, NLP and guided imagery to combat it!
