Migrain Headaches

Get rid of Migraines through the Mind

Have you ever experienced a migraine? It"s not just your ordinary everyday headache. It often starts as a dull pain at the temple area, spreading to your forehead, sinuses, even to your nape. The pain intensifies, and even with several analgesics, you can"t seem to find any relief. Your shoulder muscles are tense, you feel nauseous, your eyes hurt with light, you can"t eat and you can"t sleep because of the pain. And unlike an ordinary headache that goes away after an hour or two, expect a migraine to remain, sometimes intermittently, for three days to a week.

Migraines are commonly seen in women. There are several speculations on how it starts, what causes it or what triggers a migraine to occur, and can this be cured. Hormones have seen to play a role in causing migraines, especially in women, whose hormones tend to be erratic every month. But most commonly, it is stress that can cause a migraine attack. Stress can cause muscles to contract painfully, thus keeping the body tense and unable to relax. The degree of pain depends on how stressed you are.

Knowing this, several medications have been given to ease the pain of migraine. Minor pains can be treated with a couple of acetaminophen. A stronger attack can merit taking a muscle relaxant. Some people are even given a beta blocker or a sedative to help the body relax. However, these medications may cause addiction as well as other symptoms and side effects. But, who would want to tackle other symptoms when migraine itself can be debilitating to the body?
Since stress is found to be the main culprit for causing these migraines to occur, then the most probable course of action is to remove that stress or if not possible, relax the body. Some would wonder how you can stay relaxed when confronted with stress. This is a case of mind over matter. You need to learn how to relax to be able to have the strength to tackle the stressor.
Several methods are being taught to be able to overcome stress. One is hypnosis. Hypnosis is not just an ordinary magic trick to make you sleep, as it is often portrayed. Hypnosis has the ability to make you relax by going through a step by step process to loosening up and slowing down the whole body. Not everyone is susceptible to this but to those who are, they get into a feeling of deep relaxation. This state is often when a person"s mind is most vulnerable since the subconscious has mingled with the conscious. Once relaxed, you can feel the migraine subsiding until it is totally gone. Once relaxed, it would be easier to pinpoint exactly what has caused the migraine.
Another way to get rid of migraines is by using guided imagery. With guided imagery, you are able to focus on something else to distract you from your pain. Oftentimes, the therapist will advise you to think of a time or a place that you felt happy and carefree. When you have identified this time, you will need to visualize this until you can see it clearly in your mind. This is effectively done when your body is totally relaxed, often done with the help of hypnosis. So whenever you have a migraine attack, relaxing and visualizing those images can help reduce the pain and discomfort.
NLP or neuro linguistic programming is another method similar to guided therapy but with the use of words and positive input. It includes identifying the root cause of the migraine, often stress related, then replacing this with something less stressful. For example, a migraine attack can be triggered by anxiety about an important event coming up. Using NLP can help counteract that anxiety, thus reducing the stress and lessening the chances of developing a migraine attack. A script is often said repetitively to a relaxed mind, for easier acceptance and memory recall.

Having migraines is not an easy ailment to deal with. But using these techniques of hypnosis, NLP, and guided imagery, it can be more bearable and easier to get rid of.
